Twitter Says Goodbye to Vine

Posted on Oct 28, 2016

Today, Friday 28th October 2016, social media giant Twitter announced that it will be killing off video based app VINE. Vine launched in 2013 and offered an app that could create humorous video content you can easily share with friends. Despite having over 200 million users and over 40 million videos created, Vine has struggled to gain new users and engagement since the launch of Instagram’s video facility in 2014.

Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today. We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.

Thank you. Thank you. To all the creators out there?—?thank you for taking a chance on this app back in the day. To the many team members over the years who made this what it was?—?thank you for your contributions. And of course, thank you to all of those who came to watch and laugh every day.

What’s next? We’ll be working closely with creators to make sure your questions are answered and will work hard to do this the right way. We’ll be sharing more details on this blog and our Twitter account, and will notify you through the app when we start to change things.

Claire White, Account Director for Why Media comments: “It comes to no surprise that Twitter is removing investment from Vine, Although 200m users is an impressive number, a number we would love to see on our analytics, when you compare it to Facebook’s 1.3bn users and Instagram’s 500m monthly active users, it just isn’t catching up. With battery life and storage being a constant bone of contention with Smartphone users, they are reluctant to download lots of social media apps and therefore, if they can use the same features on an app they already have, with an established following, they will.”
