Why TikTok is becoming The New Search Engine

   News / 20 Feb 2023

Published: 20 February 2023

People first viewed TikTok as just another social media platform for dance videos and pop music when it originally launched in 2016. But after becoming extremely popular, it has gained a reputation for being a place for artistic expression and a search engine that is getting easier and easier to use.

Studies show that compared to websites like Google, TikTok is now the search engine of choice for more than 40% of users.

TikTok has evolved into a platform for media and information consumption. You can get highly specific search results when using Google to look up information in blogs and articles, but sometimes the information is overwhelming. When looking for information on TikTok, a real connection can be made between people leading to further conversations about particular topics. Additionally, TikTok has developed into a platform for users to stay current with news trends and a tool for disseminating news about political movements and political activism.

Lucy Loughrey, Digital Content Creator at Why Media states “Since the algorithm is created to show users material they are likely to be interested in, TikTok can give businesses the opportunity to express their creative side while also reaching the correct audience. A number of our clients have already adopted this platform and strong engaging content can be seen.”

The app started of as predominantly Gen Z territory but now it is being used by multiple generations. With data showing the percentage of age groups using the platform:

Ages 10-19 - 25% of users

Ages 20-29 - 22.4% of users

Age 30 -39 - are 21.7% of users

Age 40- 49 - are 20.3% of users

Age 50+ - are 11% of users

Google to stay as the number one searching platform may need to follow in the footsteps of TikTok by becoming a little more like the video app. In September it was announced that Google were looking at adding new features allowing for a quicker and more visual experience for users. For TikTok they may need to prove that it can act as a location for all information users require otherwise they may struggle to completely overtake Google.
