Peterborough UK & Finestrat Spain talk Business & Tourism

Council Leaders from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Meet with the Mayor's office for culture and tourism in Finestrat, Alicante, to highlight a shared passion for sustainability, business and tourism.  

Friday, 23rd September 2022, saw a small delegation, including Peterborough City Council Leader Wayne Fitzgerald, to share a vision to encourage trade tourism and a particular focus on the environment, which is shared by both Peterborough & Finestrat. 

Why Media had the pleasure of hosting a Community Networking Event in Finestrat, Spain, which was attended by over 65 delegates to discuss how both parties can support economic growth and Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald as the tourism opportunities for those interested in the city's historical relationship with Catherine of Aragon being buried in Peterborough Cathedral, this was very well received by the local audience.

Peterborough City Council, Why Media Spain, Centro Comercial La Marina, Resolute Asset Management, Asefi and Ayuntamiento de Finestrat all participated in the event.

Donna Rebecca Plummer, the representative of the Finestrat Mayors' office for commerce and Tourism, also helped support and arrange the event. Donna is passionate about driving tourism and business investment into the area. She shared her thoughts on the success and the turnaround of Centro Comercial La Marina and its effect on the local economy over the last three years. It was also great to hear her ideas on the environment and how as an extended community, we can all work together to help the centre's future sustainably.      

Donna Rebecca Plummer went onto say “It is such an important time for growing cities like Peterborough to come to Towns like Finestrat and see the work we have done to increase retail occupancy and drive back Tourism to pre-pandemic levels. It was great meeting Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald, Cllr Steve Allen, Cllr Rylan Ray Cllr Oliver Sainsbury, Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner John Peach Rowen Squibb & Sandy Tanner - and understand how we can highlight an open door between our communities”.

Gerry Martin MRICS from Resolute Asset Management which has delivered a number of changes as La Marina Shopping Centre

Resolute Asset Management (RAM) have taken a “success” approach to delivering near full-occupancy following a multimillion euro refurbishment project for La Marina Shopping Centre which employs over 400 people and generates vast amounts for the local economy. All parties have been impressed with the tangible turnaround by RAM and Why Media at La Marina and the increased occupancy and sales for retail and leisure businesses that occupy the centre Gerry Martin Senior Asset Manager explains “We wanted to deliverer a modern retail, F&B and leisure destination that worked for the whole community, the positive feedback from Peterborough 

City Council on the scheme's success and the works completed, fit in with new occupiers and communities feedback, we are deeply proud of La Marina Shopping Centre and the Retail Park, as well as our stunning new Roof Terrace”.

The event was in collaboration with NEXA FM, a Spanish Radio Broadcasting Station. This event allowed two passionate locations, Peterborough and Finestrat,  to unite and discuss their enthusiasm for the environment, the future and all things business.  

The event welcomed over 28 local businesses and entrepreneurs who gathered on the recently refurbished roof terrace at Centro Comercial La Marina, which boasts some of the best views of Finestrat and Benidorm.

Peterborough City Council Leader Wayne Fitzgerald went on to say, “The environment, more tourism and high-quality jobs are at the agenda for both our communities, and this was a great event to attend, and expose Peterborough not only as the United Kingdom's environmental capital but also share our other USP’s including our modern housing and infrastructure and the growth of our city and the metropolitan communities which we boast in Peterborough, we invite all potential investors and visitors to our city so they can see for themselves why we have such a great future and are very much open to trading partnerships.”
