Everything you need to know about the social media platform shaking up advertising and finding new ways of reaching audiences. The short answer is yes. Here is why.

In 2021, Tik Tok was recorded as the most downloaded app. They beat long-time social media must-haves, Facebook and Instagram, in terms of downloads.

What is it?

Launched in 2016, Tik Tok is populated by one billion users and continues growing its community daily. However, unlike Facebook and Instagram, its unique selling point is its solely video-based layout.

Globally, Tik Tok rocketed in popularity due to the individuality and creativity that the app warrants; videos aren't restricted to 6-second clips but instead can reach up to 10 minutes in content. From fleeting dance trends to accounts that can teach you to speak a new language throughout a few videos, the possibilities on Tik Tok are limitless.

What is the aim for businesses?

More specifically, looking from a business point of view, Tik Tok is the perfect place to express a more creative side of your company and help widen the audience you reach. And fast.

Before you begin making content, you can set up an account and get familiar with your ‘for you page’ (your customised feed of videos Tik Tok has created to meet your interests).  Research needed is minimal; as you scroll, you will become familiar with ‘trending’ audios that you can simply put behind your videos and reach other people’s ‘for you pages’. Once comfortable, you can level up and utilise Tik Tok ads or campaigns which are integrated seamlessly into the feeds. Consequently, they are less interruptive than traditional ads and have been proven more effective.

Currently, Ryan Air has precisely 1.7million Tik Tok followers and 16.5 million likes.

Examples of companies that have unexpectedly thrived from their Tik Tok activity is airline company Ryanair which soared to the skies in their reach and attention on the app. People in North America and Asia-pacific began testifying they wanted the airline company to start flying over there just after watching Ryan Air’s 10-second clips. Then, at an unpredictable rate, their followers reached 1.7 million, and they were on the front cover of May’s issue of Aviation Marketing Monthly.

Am I too old for Tik Tok?

Originally, Tik Tok was a platform dominated by 16-year-olds; as the app has expanded, so has its age range. No longer Gen Z’s territory, the app is now made up of multiple generations and used by many as a critical marketing tool. Recent data shows that:

  • Ages 10-19 are 25% of users
  • Ages 20-29 are 22.4% of users
  • Ages 30-39 are 21.7% of users.
  • Ages 40-49 are 20.3% of users.
  • Ages 50+ are 11% of users.

As predicted, the younger age bracket is the most significant percentage of users, yet your target audience can still be reached.  Through likes, comments and shares via other social media platforms like Whatsapp and Snapchat, your business can reach millions in a matter of seconds. Furthermore, a young audience is never bad as they can help your videos gain more attention just by liking the clip!

Facebook’s valuation is 1 trillion dollars.

How effective is Tik Tok with platforms like Facebook and Instagram still going strong?

Familiar social media platform Facebook was knocked back by Tik Tok’s takeover. For the first time, they reported revenue of $28.8bn in the three months to June, down almost 1% from $29.08bn the previous year. This stat is said to be a direct impact of the growing competition from Tik Tok. A stat that shocked everyone in the social media industry and was a huge sign of what Tik Tok is capable of. Furthermore, Facebook had lower advertising sales because more ad revenue was directed to Tik Tok. Therefore, the statistics tell businesses everything they need to know. If you are currently using Facebook as a marketing tool and seeing success, it’s only logical for you to start using Tik Tok too.

Overall:

The business profiles that follow trends, get involved and post consistently valuable content are more likely to be rewarded in the short-term and long-term with followers and views, consequently leading to more business success.
