RIP Internet Explorer… You won't be missed [brief history]

Today marks the day that Microsoft (finally!) retires its outdated, slow and oftentimes backwards web browser. Originally built by Microsoft to allow for a more dynamic web environment, after 27 years of existence it’s now become somewhat of a meme in the web development industry, and the bane of many developers' ambitions.

Microsoft first announced the retirement of their once flagship browser over a year ago, allowing many legacy websites and software the opportunity to upgrade. Now, as of today, any user attempting to access the browser will be redirected to Microsoft’s Edge browser (which under the bonnet is now based on Google’s Chromium browser, which tells us you a lot).

There is one caveat, however, enterprise users of Windows 10 will still be able to use Internet Explorer V11. Only where it is used within desktop applications. Many outdated applications, in healthcare for example, rely on Internet Explorer to function.

Now we are no longer relying on dial-up internet and the web has become somewhat standardised, there is a plethora of browsers to choose from; Each having its own benefits and drawbacks.

For more power users you have Chrome & Firefox, for the security conscious you have Brave & DuckDuckGo.

In conclusion, while the title may appear that Internet Explorer was hated by us. This was simply not the case. Whilst it created many challenges for our developers, it allowed for some creative thinking and problem solving that I'm sure will be missed… a little bit.
